ANGER AND FORGIVESNESS. (From this months Berkeley Wellness and Mayo Clinic Health Alerts). The word ANGER comes from the same root as ANGINA, the chest pains caused by inadequate blood supply to the heart. Chronic anger places one at increased risk for cardiovascular disease but a review in the European Heart Journal shows that even a single angry outburst can have immediate adverse effects, although not usually serious unless it becomes a pattern. In contrast, FORGIVENESS is associated with improved health. It is unfortunate that we have linked forgiving and forgetting since the two have nothing to do with one another. Forgiveness is a decision to let go of the resentment and thoughts of revenge. It means to give up our right to seek repayment for the debt anothers behavior generated. Knowing we are the one hurt by carrying the grudge, we can choose to forgive even if forgiveness wasnt requested. Forgiveness does not mean that we are denying the other persons responsibility. Nor are we denying that we were hurt by an act. It does not minimize or justify the wrong. It does bring a kind of peace that helps us go on with life.
