APRIL FULL MOON - RED (Blood moon) or PINK MOON? I have been seeing increasing disagreements online over the name of this coming April full moon so I thought it was time to set the record straight once and for all.... Please feel free to share! Astronomers rarely if ever use the term red or blood moon. When they do, they are usually using it as an alternate name for the Hunters Moon, the full moon that follows the Harvest Moon, usually in late October. The Hunters Moon, like the Harvest Moon, rises slowly on autumn evenings so that it shines through a thick layer of the Earths atmosphere, and is colored red by Rayleigh scattering and air pollution. Many cultures have given names to the full moon throughout the year. Different full moon names can be found among the Chinese, Celtic, Old English, and New Guinea cultures, to name a few. In addition, Native American tribes often used moon phases and cycles to keep track of the seasons and gave a unique name to each recurring full moon. The full moon names were used to identify the entire month during which each occurred. The April full Moon heralded the arrival of spring; Flowers begin to appear, including the widespread grass pink or wild ground phlox.—one of the first spring flowers. In the Northern hemisphere it is most commonly known as the “Pink Moon”. It is also known as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and the Fish Moon. (Common among coastal tribes) In the southern hemispheres the April full moon is usually referred to as Harvest Moon, Hunter’s Moon or Blood Moon. At least twice a year, the lunar eclipse provides parts of the world with the beautiful, yet frightening, glimpse of a crimson lunar surface and this is where the term red or blood full moon has come from. However as there is not always an eclipse at the same time every year the names “Pink” or “Blood “moon or any or the other alternative moon names for April are all indeed correct! To explain what happens during an Eclipse and why the moon turns red here is a short video from Nasa! Btw I realise the date on the video is not correct, it’s an old one! space/11906-turning-moon-blood-red.html Moonflower )O(
