ARREST OF ROBBER IN THE ACT IS A TESTAMENT TO THE WORK BEING DONE BY POLICE TO PROTECT OUR RESIDENTS A robbery at the Forget Mini Mart on Elmview Drive in Hanmer was thwarted by an undercover Greater Sudbury Police officer on Tuesday night at around 7:50 p.m. This should be a message to all individuals of any age who may have been thinking that they can get away with crime in Valley East or anywhere in the City of Greater Sudbury. I also want to thank the members of the Valley East Community Facebook Group for their continued sharing of the extent of the criminal activities that have been going on in the area. With all of the robberies in the community recently the police department ended up deploying officers from the services BEAR (Break and Enter and Robbery) unit to the area with undercover officers being placed in high risk places. The article in the Sudbury Star contains the following report: At 7:50 p.m., a plainclothes officer conducting surveillance saw a man enter the Forget Minimart, located at 4558 Elmview St. “The plainclothes officer found himself in close proximity and was able to observe this male conceal his face with a balaclava as he entered the store,” police said. “Shortly thereafter, the suspect did exit the store still wearing his disguise and was now brandishing a large kitchen knife. “Again, once outside and in a safe location, the suspect was arrested at gunpoint and found to be in possession of a quantity of cash taken during the holdup.” With other plainclothes officers in the area and with the help of the K-9 Unit, the suspect’s accomplice, who was waiting in the getaway car behind the Hanmer Mall, was located and arrested without incident. Further investigation then determined the suspect was responsible for a robbery Oct. 4 at the One Stop Variety on Cote Street, and another Oct. 9 at the Pioneer gas bar located on Highway 69 North. As a result, a 36-year-old man has been charged with: - three counts of robbery with a weapon; - three counts of disguise with intent; and - three counts of possession of dangerous weapon. The woman, 42, was charged with one count of robbery. Both were held in custody pending a bail hearing. Police did not release their names. thesudburystar/2014/10/15/sudbury-officers-arrest-robber-at-gunpoint
