ASU Housing for Fall - I know some of you arent very happy with - TopicsExpress

ASU Housing for Fall - I know some of you arent very happy with your Fall ASU Housing placement. I have written many emails in the past month to ASU Housing staff and every chance I see one of their staff in person, I pass along your concerns. Here is a summary of my efforts and its not really great news: I have spoken repeatedly to ASU Housing about the unequal features of the various dorms and how that creates tension among the BSMP students who are in different dorms. I have also asked repeatedly that BSMP students who have been longer should have first choice in dorm location over the newer BSMP students. But on both of those issues, ASU Housing only listens to my requests, they dont say much in their responses and end up not doing anything to help. They say that there are 11,000 students being placed in housing in the Fall. 10,000 of them are Freshmen and BSMP students cant be placed with them due to age differences. The 1,000 left over are then spread out to various dorms based on open rooms. They will not work with me on students already here and have not responded to any individual student requests about housing that I have advocated for. Im sad to say that I am really powerless in this arena. They only inform me of where the new BSMP students from Brazil are placed once they arrive. I asked fort new students who are arriving in August to be be placed in Adelphi and that the students currently there should have the option to go elsewhere. I have advocated strongly that students should have the option to have a non-Brazilian roommate. I have advocated strongly that unequal bathroom, kitchen and pool facilities creates division in a program where everyone is supposed to be the same. To those issues all I have received is vague assurances that they are trying to make it better in the future. I want to tell you that Im trying again. Ive been speaking with my supervisors at AECP and Im asking them to advocate on your behalf with ASU Housing. Im trying to create a more fair system for you. I will keep trying but what can you do in the meantime? The students who have had a little success in controlling their housing destiny are those who work closely with their local dorm staff. Go to the Front Desk of your dorm and ask to see a supervisor. Explain your situation and see if they can help improve your placement. If you are unsuccessful in your attempt to change your housing placement, then you might consider working with IIE on either off-campus housing or individual room placements. You very likely have to pay for the cost differences yourself but it is something you could look into. I am not as familiar with this process but do contact IIE with your questions and they can provide more guidance on this option. I know this is very difficult and stressful for those of you who are unhappy. It is easy for me to give you advice when Im not the one living in your shoes. I just ask that you remember to conduct your requests to ASU Housing staff with kind words and a kind demeanor but with the necessary firmness to get your frustration across. I will keep you updated on any results of my efforts within the university. While we have to live in the world as it is and not as we want it to be, I hope that working together we can make it a little closer to a better world. Good luck to us all. John
