ATTENTION ALL EDUCATORS & PARENTS: The purpose of this memo is to forward information we have been sent by the U.S. Department of Education with regard to school safety after the events of past several days. School safety is a top priority for schools in your state or country- but specifically, here in the wilderness of North America. We must continue to address this issue in an effective and productive manner. Our students need to know that threats are no laughing matter. If you need further information, contact the State Education Department in your state. The U.S. DOE information follows: As part of their safe schools plans and programs, local schools and districts in your state already have the processes and programs in place to implement corrective action should an unsafe situation occur. The events in Florida, New York City and on Capitol Hill over the last number of days compel us all to consider the possibility of a bio-terrorism threat to school campuses. The Department of Education is encouraging you to take a proactive approach and work with your local school districts in responding to this potential as you would any other school safety situation. Specifically, we would encourage, as an adjunct to your states safe school programs, to include suggested plans for: The sorting and delivery of mail; Handling of suspicious pieces of mail; Disseminating information quickly and accurately to parents and teachers; and Evacuating a school should authorities deem it prudent. We at the department feel strongly that there is no need to panic or raise alarm among our parents, students, teachers or administrators.
