If we stand in Christ and are secure in him because of a certain measure of devotion we perceive to have in ourselves, we have failed and are in great danger. One of the greatest ways we magnify God is when we recognize we are absolutely nothing without his grace. The most loving thing a pastor can for for his flock in his care is to urge them onward. Everyone is either plowing uphill or rolling downhill. There is no easy path that leads to Christ. Our affections for Christ grow not because we get better, but because the virtue / grandness / greatness of the One we love draws it from us. The most pious of saints, the most well-known and well-used Christians in Gods kingdom were all remarkable, not because of their religious devotion, but because they had seen Christ, and nothing else mattered to them but Him. Those who know God are the ones who love God. You cannot love God without knowing him. The Christian life is about growing in knowledge of God, not merely intellectually, but spiritually.
