Abemo is a 13-year old boy from Longsa village under Wokha district, Nagaland. His father passed away when he was barely 2-years old. His mother was sickly and couldn’t support him any longer after the deathof his father, so she took him to Ebenezer Orphanage Home, Dimapur in 2007 at the age of 7. It was indeed really sad for little Abemo when he lost his mother again in 2009. However now the outlook has changedin little Abemo’s life after he started attending school like any other children in the city. He hopes to become a police officer someday and loves playing football and basketball. He is currently studying in class 7 at Don Bosco School, Dimapur. He said the bond between him and his motherwas the best thing he ever had. He misses his mother from time to time and said the picture of his mother crosses his mind every time. He also remembers the day when his mother took him away from his village to Dimapur. He said it was a “fearful nightmare, dawn of thousand dreams, untrue promises, outnumbered hugs and kisses unstoppable tears; unbeatable farewell was all I had that morning. I was unsure where I was heading to. My mother held me in her hands and dropped me off to a new world. I followed her words, I was frustrated, I was desperate, I was helpless, I cried my heart out, I lost control, my motherconcealed her tears and walked away from me. I knew her conditional love for me was beyond description and inexplicable; however the trauma of situation compelled us to separate”, said Abemo. Abemo said his mother promised she would come and take him away one day but that day never came. “I couldn’t belief my eyes that the new world was going to be my destined home. I cried day and night. I ran afterher in the same old ground without my foot being moved. The longer I ran,I saw her no more and there she disappeared like an angel in the cloud. Soon I was assisted and provided with new requirements however I hated it and I felt breathless. I was protected and comforted by my new family members in the house”, says the all grown up Abemo. 9-year old Moses Phom too lost his father when he was born and his mother got married to another man. He was brought to the home when he was 3-years old in 2007 by his uncle. Moses is in standard V at Vivekananda School, Dimapur and wants to becomea doctor. He loves football and playing with his other mates. Ebenezer Orphanage Home is run by amissionary Akum Amri (B.Th., M.Div.). He is the founder and director of the home. His love for music remained unchanged and he dreamed of pursuing his career in music until God spoke to him to open an orphanage for the poor, helpless and the meek. He opened an orphanage on 26th July 2005 with 3 orphans. Akum also has a daughter, Apiana, who is 3-years old. When he first started the orphanage, Akum was assisted by his parents and his siblings. At present, he has 22 orphanages for children from the age group of 3 to 13 years and comprises of 11 boys and girls each. He also runs a primary school for beginners which he proudly coined as ‘Little Feet Montessori School’ including a hostel to support his mission. Narrating the struggles he had to face when he first started the orphanage, Akum said that his main stumbling block was lack of financial support. “Once in a year, the government provides assistance and charity box is placed in few schools and colleges andin some churches and in some famousoutlets”, said Akum, adding, “Financial assistance is also contributed by well wishers and other individuals”. He believes in dignity of labour and true to it, one can see his staff workingendlessly for the children. The children at the home are mostly from the Phom and Konyak tribes and few Adivasis from West Bengal as well as children from the neighboring states. The home has become a home for the unfortunate, a relief for the lost, a privilege for the unprivileged with a goal to equip orphans with a Christian education and life skills and to raise a generation of orphans prepared to be significant contributors to their society.
