Adhan The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S and his Sahabah - TopicsExpress

Adhan The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S and his Sahabah (Companions) began looking for various means for calling people to the Masjid (Mosque) for Salah (Prayers). A discussion process started among the Muslims. People came up with many suggestions. The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S discussed the merits of each and every suggestion with his Sahabah (Companions). Some of the suggestions were: Lighting a fire Putting up a bell on the Masjidun Nabi (Mosque of the Messenger S). Ringing a Flat bell, made out of a flattened circular sheet of metal. Blowing into a conch (Sea Shell). Blowing into a horn. Sending people through the localities, calling others for prayers Initially, t he Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S liked the idea of a bell but dropped it later, because of its similarity with the Christians. He also liked the idea of blowing into a horn. But none of these ideas was accepted for one reason or the other. A little while later, in the year 1H (Hijrah) (622 AD), a Sahabi (Companion of Muhammad S) brought up a very unique idea to the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S. This Sahabi (Companion of Muhammad S) ‘Abdullah bin Zayd bin ‘Abd Rabbihi R, had seen quite an unusual dream. In his dream, he saw a man walking past him carrying a large conch (Sea Shell). In his dream, ‘Abdullah bin Zayd R stopped that man and asked him whether he would sell that conch to him. The man in his dream asked ‘Abdullah bin Zayd R about its purpose. He told the man in his dream that he would use the conch to call Muslims for Salah (Prayers). The man in the dream told ‘Abdullah bin Zayd R that he has a better suggestion and gave him the words and method of Adhan (Call for Prayers). He also taught the words and method for Iqamah (Second call for Prayers). The next morning ‘Abdullah bin Zayd R rushed to the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S to tell him his dream. The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S liked it very much. He told ‘Abdullah bin Zayd R that his dream was a true vision from Allah (God). The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S then asked him to teach the words and method of Adhan (Call for Prayers) to Bilal R, a former slave; as he had a much louder and more melodius voice. Bilal R called the first Adhan (Call for Prayers). Upon hearing the first Adhan (Call for Prayers), ‘Umar bin Khattab R rushed to Masjid An-Nabi (Mosque of the Messenger S). He told the Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S that he had also seen exactly the same dream. The Messenger of Allah, Muhammad S praised Allah (God). Umar bin Khattab R was a prominent Sahabi (Companion of Muhammad S), who later became the second Khalifah (Caliph) of Muslims. ‘Umar bin Khattab R heard this (Adhan) when he was in his house, and he came out trailing cloak and said, Messenger of Allah S, by Him who has sent you with the truth, I have seen the same kind of thing as has been revealed. To this Allah’s Messenger S replied, “Praise be to Allah!” (Tirmidhi)
