After 4 months of hard work by the designers, contractors and my engineering and IT teams, we made the final cutover of the TV station to the new electrical substation, distribution and generator systems last night. It was only the second time in my 25+ years that the entire building was dark for more than a few minutes. Transitioning the main technical panels and three office/occupancy panels in the basement took a little over 3 hours with two teams of electricians working simultaneously. I have a real respect for the electricians who had to route and land multiple cables that are as big around as your wrist into breaker lugs with only a few inches of clearance to the panel walls. With over 3 days of careful power auditing and planning by my #2, Paul Garnet, and my IT Manager, Peter Conkling, and by deploying a LOT of carefully placed extension cords (of which only a few are shown in the picture below), we stayed on the air through the whole process. Its pretty weird to shut off all the main electrical panels and then have to reboot Jurassic Park ! I just remember that scene in the movie where he throws the big breaker and said hold onto your butts ;-)
