After a long time I found a movie that is worth writing a long review. Get your water bottles ready :P. It is not just a review of Dhanush’s VIP, as the film in itself reflects the state and fate of the fresh Engineers and it is a commercial dedication to the most talented people of this society, the ENGINEERS. Nowadays the freshly passed out Engineers have four options. 1. If your father is a big-shot who runs a profitable business, go and sit in his shadows and lay eggs. 2. If your parents can afford 40 lakhs for your higher education and still claim that they are middle class people, go and purchase an MS from US, bow down to the foreigners, forget your family and friends, sit in your home and watch EPL without even knowing your country’s Home Minister. 3. Shave your beard and moustache, get an IT job, bend your backs for foreigners, play Temple Run in train, download and watch English serials and you won’t even know the building collapse in your locality killing 60 people. 4. Get a recommendation, get a Core job and you will get the most unadventurous, dry and dragging life that you can ever get. This is the fate of the today’s Engineers who studied night and day reading the driest of books for 4 long years sacrificing the colourful life that their Arts and Science counterpart had. The film has rightly pointed out that, every year 5 lakh engineers pass out of colleges, but there are not more than 50,000 jobs. Today, education is the biggest business and colleges are selling their seats for big money. My point is that there should be limited seats in colleges which should be allotted on the basis of pure meritocracy so that we can shoot up an high standard of education instead of selling the seats and spoiling the system. Then those 50,000 jobs can be filled by the most deserving candidates and the rest 4,50,000 can have a really better life. If you don’t know who you are going to be, please don’t become an Engineer, because those 4 years can suck the life out of your life. The actual review portion begins :P VIP begins with the “D25” logo, as the film is Dhanush’s 25th, it was promoted as D25. It brings back the memories of “Thala 50” but the little man couldn’t stir up much goosebumps as the big man did. Give him some time, he is just 25 films old. Dhanush has Rajini’s mannerisms, Vikram’s performance, Vijay’s swag and Ajith’s mass. He writes his own lyrics and sings his own songs. Nothing much to say about the other cast and crew as it is evidently a one man show. Samuthirakani looks too young to play a father’s role but he impresses us just with his voice. We are bored of seeing Saranya in the role of a friendly mom. Villians are “Amul Babies” and Amala Paul makes you say “Ppaah”. Other small characters like Vivek add to the spice of the film. Director showed his mettle in his portrayal of Dhanush’s bike as an important character in the film. He came out with flying colours, sandwiching the society’s hot topic between a regular story line that belongs to the 80s. Nothing much to say about the Cinematography. Anirudh’s music sounds noisy at some portions but he makes it up with larger than life BGMs and trendy songs. Amma Amma song justifies why he is paid such big money. But all these factors doesn’t make a big mark in front of Dhanush. He enters the “Big League” in terms of screen-presence and the truth is that most in the “Big League” couldn’t give even 10% what Dhanush gave in terms of screen-performance. He is arguably the best performer in the whole country but the surprising fact is, why he was not able to emulate the box office numbers of Vijay, Ajith, Surya or even Sivakarthikeyan. Critics have pointed out to his imitations of Rajini, but the first half is full of Dhanush’s own mannerisms which no one could emulate and Rajini style is just an additional flavour to his talent. But you can’t deny that there is a superstar in the making and he is going to be a force to reckon with. Don’t expect a “Thupakki” or an “Ayan”, but you can expect a “Sivaji” or a “Mankatha” of Dhanush’s own magnitude. Overall VIP is a one man show, best commercial pot boiler of the year and paisavasool. Film buffs, if you find the review worth giving a read, please do “share” as it will encourage independent writers who take an extra effort to take good films one step closer to the public. Writing is my passion. Critics for the long review are welcome. Thanks for giving your time. #VIP #D25
