After graduating from Government College,Umuahia in 1991 I worked with a mason or bricklayer, on one occasion I observed a process which has taught me a great lesson for life by then having stayed at home for five(5) years while waiting for JAMB and JAMB was jamming me that I will want to share with you. On this fateful day the mason was determined to demolish a wall. With his brick hammer he began making impacts on the wall. The first impact did not move the wall in anyway. Over time, I realised his level of energy increased as he impacted the wall continuously. He was sweating so profusely due to the energy he was expending on doing the job. He had made many attempts at bringing the wall down. But the more he tried, the more the wall stood aloof. But I realised that after a pretty long period of hitting and sweating and drinking some water, the wall was down flat like the Wall of Jericho in the times of the Israelites. He then heaved a sigh of relief and went on to do other jobs. When I got home that day, the whole scenery began playing in my mind as I left. I tried to make some sense out of it after several thoughts. From what I saw, none of the earlier impacts made to the wall produced the desired result of bringing the wall down. Did it mean those earlier impacts were not necessary? How different was the last impact from the rest? “Maybe he used his greatest amount of energy on the last than the prior”, I thought to myself. It then occurred to me that even though the prior impacts produced no desired results, they contributed in bringing the wall down. I can safely say they were as important as the last. This illustration is metaphorical to how life is. You can never begin something today and expect gargantuan results instantly. It’s only a naïve farmer who sows seeds today and looks forward to a bumper harvest the next day. You can’t start a business, ministry, or any venture and expect spectacular results immediately. Life is a time process. Most often, we want results as fast as we can. But do I blame us? Partly not! We’re surrounded with fast foods, fast cars, and smart phones. You can log on to the internet on the go. Everything is so fast. Breakthroughs in science and technology are doubling by the hour. We live in an era of speed and jet age. But we fail to recognise that life doesn’t work that way. People want to make their first million in a day. They want to buy the best cars, own the best homes and take the best of vacations just immediately. People enter relationships and expect things to work just fast. No, it doesn’t happen that way. Relax!! And when it happens that results are not trickling in as we want them to, we often feel frustrated, rejected, fear, and disappointed. We all feel frustrated. You’re free to feel frustrated and wish to give up. It’s not a crime. But don’t give up!!! No, not just yet! You may not see light at the end of the tunnel. But why not walk a little more towards the end of the tunnel? You’re closer to the end of the tunnel than you are at the entrance. You can’t go back. You may not see the light, but just one step forward could be what you need to see it. You’ve fought too hard to give up now. Keep working it! Keep hitting that ‘wall’ with your hammer of perseverance. That last blow may be all you need to bring that wall of struggles down. Swim across the sea. If you don’t get to the beach, never give up. Remember you’re not in the sea alone; we’re all there with you. You can’t afford to give up. We need you to make our victory whole. Keep on keeping on. The battle isn’t over yet. Be happy in your hope. Do not give up when trouble comes. Do not let anything stop you from praying. Romans 12:12. NLV. This article was originally written in April,2014.
