After my rant Ive pasted a list of all of Strange Fruits clients. Heres what I suggest: Contact them & let them know that their PR firm, Strange Fruit, is named after a poem/song about lynching. The company knows this, doesnt care, refuses to even consider a name change. And come on, thats just really bad PR. The strange fruit hanging from the trees are the bodies of black men. Back in Jan 2013, this company responded to a tweet about their name claiming that their company has nothing to do with that. They think theyre just making a cutesy play about quirky fruit. (Hey, were just hipsters! Our name is supposed to be special snowflake preciousness, not racist! Well, then call it Quirky Fruit, or basically ANYTHING ELSE.) But thats not okay. You cant erase or overlook this history simply because you post a picture of figs on your homepage. And even more than that, THIS IS A PR FIRM. They should do better. I mean, you KNOW what your name actually means. Youve been called out on that. PR implies you probably have at least some contact with the media on a regular basis. Maybe you watch some TV, read the paper, go on the internet, check out social media. And unless youre really just totally hidden under your blanket of white privilege, youve probably at least heard of whats been going on in this country lately with Ferguson, Eric Garner, Tamir Rice, right? I mean, at least something? They need to change the name. Its only one business, but its a start. Its not okay.
