After todays work session, it looks like the wind is blowing in - TopicsExpress

After todays work session, it looks like the wind is blowing in the direction of establishing some interim zoning ordinances as opposed to a moratorium on I-502. A decision will be made one way or the other this Wednesday night at our Council meeting. Our city attorney, Tim Donaldson, believes that setting interim ordinances into motion will help us have more control over the implementation of the initiative than we otherwise would have if we established a moratorium. The WSLCB (Liquor Control Board) will be issuing permits/licenses in November regardless of whether or not jurisdictions have moratoria set into place, and whether or not a municipality or county has established this will not likely prevent the opening of a pot store. The good news is that there are not a whole lot of options for the stores to be located due to all kinds of buffer zones that prohibit their placement. For instance, a retail outlet cannot be within 1000 feet of a daycare, school, or public library. There are many other restrictions that will cause this type of store to only be allowed in very limited areas in town...thereby limiting their presence to youngsters. In fact, the entire downtown area is overlapped with buffers, making it impossible for a store to exist there the way the law is written. Regardless, I am not in the least bit excited for all of this to transpire. I dont see weed shops as a positive influence on our community in any way, shape or form. But whats done is done, and now we must do our best to abide by the new law, while at the same time working to keep our community and youth safe by regulating it the best we can. I will post again some point after the meeting Wednesday. Feel free to shoot me your comments or questions, as Im sure you have them!
