Seminar Content Since the Chek Lap Kok airport construction in the 1990’s, the Chinese white dolphins have been extensively studied in Hong Kong through a multi-disciplinary long-term monitoring programme. Much has been learnt about their population biology since then, and various studies revealed that the dolphins are clearly in trouble, with a rapid decline in abundance in the past decade. With the upcoming waves of coastal development around Lantau Island, including the recent controversial airport’s third runway expansion project, their future survival is seriously in doubt. In this seminar, the speaker will share his first-hand experience of studying these magnificent creatures at our backyard, and present the latest information on various aspects of this important member in our marine ecosystem. The attendees will also learn the threats that the dolphins are facing, including the synopsis on how some of the recently proposed infrastructure project will seriously jeopardize the survival of our local dolphins. About the Speaker: Samuel Hung Ka-Yiu, Ph.D Dr. Hung currently serves as the Director of Hong Kong Cetacean Research Project, overseeing a long-term research and monitoring programme on Chinese white dolphins and Indo-Pacific finless porpoises in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta region in the past 17 years. He has been extensively involved the long-term research on several species of coastal small cetaceans in the Greater China Region, and is widely recognized as one of the leading cetacean specialists in Asia. Over the past decade, Dr. Hung and his research team have successfully completed several major studies funded by the various government departments and NGOs in Hong Kong, and has been in charge of numerous marine mammal monitoring and environmental impact assessment projects in collaboration with local and international environmental consultant firms. His Ph.D. dissertation study on fine-scale habitat use of Chinese white dolphins at the University of Hong Kong was completed in 2008, and this pioneer study has provided valuable tools to identify the most critical habitats of dolphins in Hong Kong that need special attention for conservation. Dr. Hung has also participated in a number of research projects in China and Taiwan, and has authored co-authored over 25 scientific papers on marine mammals in the past decade. As the Chairman of the Hong Kong Dolphin Conservation Society, Dr. Hung has also contributed much effort in raising public awareness on whales and dolphins by producing many educational materials, holding hundreds of seminars and teacher workshops, giving numerous conference presentations, writing popular articles and leading dolphin-watching tours.
