All this brew ha ha over President Obamas Gettysburg Address reading. He used one of Lincolns own copies of the speech. Perhaps he left himself wide open to the broadsides that so many have fired at him for leaving two words out. So much indignation is being displayed by sooooo many. Mind you, I am a believing man myself, but I am also a bit of a history nut, and accuracy is important....Soooooooo.... In the Nickolay and Hay copies of the speech, which Lincoln gave to these men, the words Under God are not there. I think many fellow citizens do not know about Lincolns rather luke warm Christianity, and in their zeal to find anything negative to write about Mr. Obama, are once again displaying a lack of study of history. Of course Mr. Lincoln was a politician, not a Minister. ( Abraham is a great name for a minister though. Barak is derived from the Hebrew word for Blessing. Abraham, well, yall know about him. He is claimed by Jews, Christians and Moslems) So anyway, the Gbrg address------- Nicolay Copy: Named for John G. Nicolay, President Lincolns personal secretary, this is considered the first draft of the speech, begun in Washington on White house stationery. The second page is writen on different paper stock, indicating it was finished in Gettysburg before the cemetery dedication began. Lincoln gave this draft to Nicolay, who went to Gettysburg with Lincoln and witnessed the speech. The Library of Congress owns this manuscript. Hay Copy Believed to be the second draft of the speech, President Lincoln gave this copy to John Hay, a White House assistant. Hay accompanied Lincoln to Gettysburg and briefly referred to the speech in his diary: the President, in a fine, free way, with more grace than is his wont, said his half dozen words of consecration. Again, before you curse my soul to damnation, or call me a Muslim, (I was raised in a Jewish home after my adoption) or a lousy American, fascist, ignorant wretch, or whatever, I just want to shine the light of truth. Lincoln himself wrote the thing, spoke it, and was murdered because some folks didnt like it. If the President has bothered to call me ahead of time, told me which version of Lincolns genius he was going to use, and asked me what I thought I would have advised him to avoid leaving the door wide open for the millions of unwashed and holy who would slam him for his choice. Once again, he didnt ask, and see what has happened? I tell them and tell them! Call me!. As I approach November 22nd, Thanksgiving, and CHRISTmas, I cannot help but pause and THANK the Lord that I live in my US of A. I believe in God, the essential goodness of my fellow countrymen, and the truth that as long as the things that hold us together are stronger than the things that would tear us apart all will work out well. Let us keep on keeping on. Knowing, as JFK once said, that here on earth Gods work must truly be our own. Sorry if I sounded a bit preachy, or if I sound like I am defending the President. I will try, in the future to sound like the wretched fool we all know I am indeed.
