Among other things, my physical improvement program is coming along. When I was young, I was very athletic. As I got older my lifestyle became more sedentary. For the last 15 years until I retired I was a corrections officer. Basically, I sat around babysitting sentenced felons, eating institutional food, and often working 16-hour shifts. The only exercise I got was walking to the messhall, the occasional shakedown, or having to bodyslam some dude that thought he was bad. Id get out of breath tying my boots. By the time I retired, I was 325 pounds, my legs were weak, and I was suffering from general atrophy and mild arthritis in my lower lumbar. Then, for the first two years all I did was sit at my computer and write VULCANIUM. By the time that was published I was about 30% disabled. My wife had a new pool installed and Ive spent about a year trying to get back into shape VERY SLOWLY so I dont hurt myself and fall out. Lately Ive gotten back onto the treadmill and am using the weight machines in our gym again. Cross-training in several sports, actually. The key seems to be: dont overdo any one thing; tune into your body and give it what you feel it needs. I want to get down to about 190 ripped with a sixpack and benching at least 300 pounds. Its not a vanity thing, it has to do with survival. Plus, I would just like to be that strong to do the kinds of work and play I enjoy. Aint nothing to it but to do it. If the journey of 1,000 miles begins with a single step, I figure Im at that point in the road where Ive got about 999 more to go. But Ive made it that first mile and Im still walking. Feels good! ENJOY LIFE! THATS WHAT ITS FOR!!! :-)
