An adaptation of the 2013 British-Filipino film, Metro Manila, CityLights is not a quintessential love story but a beautiful, emotional & agonizingly honest tale of a happily married couple, grappling with poverty, in a village in Rajasthan, which drives them to take certain drastic steps & who come to the City of Dreams, Mumbai, hoping for a better life. A great script, tight screenplay, soulful music & an absolutely superlative cast..... CityLights has everything going for it. Its fast paced & intriguing with plenty of interesting twists & turns. Rajkummar Rao does a stellar job of portraying the myriad of emotions of his character, a man who loves his family fiercely & can go to any lengths for them. Debut actress Patralekha gives a compelling performance as a naive & vulnerable young mother but one who has the grit to fight back when the need arises. The little girl who plays the daughter of the couple, looks adorable, acts well & her endearing innocence tugs at your heartstrings, throughout the film & The one actor who really stands out is the very talented, Manav Kaul, he wows the audience with his brilliant performance & brings in the much needed humor to a film that is predominantly dark & realistic. National Award winning director, Hansal Mehtas latest offering is relevant in today’s India, it’s extremely poignant & completely overwhelms your senses, an experience worth every heart wrenching moment, every tear shed, a film not to be missed.
