An alternative perspective on the vote to cap the social security - TopicsExpress

An alternative perspective on the vote to cap the social security budget. There has been a lot of anger about Labours actions on this vote. However, the vote was about a cap on the *overall* welfare budget in the govts pot and *not* on payments made to individuals. If, come 2015, Labour get in and if they: increase employment, increase the minimum wage so that it is a *living* wage, outlaw zero-hours contracts, bring in a rents cap, build a million new homes as promised, etc, etc, then the demands placed on the budget for social security will be lower anyway. This may have actually been a very cunning move by Labour, knowing that the public have been brainwashed into thinking anyone claiming the support to which they are rightfully entitled is simply a benefits scrounger. The Tories *always* attack Labour on social security spending. This move disarms the Tories from being able to do that. newstatesman/politics/2014/03/labour-welfare-cap-rebels-full-list
