An employer in our area has informed their employees of a data breach that may have impacted their personal information. This is a frustrating and stressful situation, and we sympathize will all those affected. Based on what we know at this time, here is our response to the breach. (These recommendations may change as the situation develops...) To the best of our knowledge at this time, it does not appear that the payroll system was compromised. It is not known if credit union account numbers were included in the compromised files, but seems unlikely based on current information. One thing that almost certainly was NOT included in the breach are Visa debit and credit card numbers. Here are important steps to take if your information may have been included in this data breach: • Carefully watch your account for unauthorized activity. o Online and via mobile are the best ways to do this. o You can use our free e-alerts system to automatically send you an email whenever specific transactions happen, such as a withdrawal in excess of $100 or if the balance in an account drops below a specific dollar amount. • Put a fraud alert on your credit report: o https://alerts.equifax/AutoFraud_Online/jsp/fraudAlert.jsp o This will place the alert directly with Equifax, who will automatically forward this alert to Experian and TransUnion too. • Don’t panic. It is unlikely that your credit union account will be affected. If unauthorized transactions do occur, you can dispute those transactions with us directly. The law is strongly on the side of the account holder, giving us the ability to return fraudulent transactions. Please feel free to share this information with anyone else who may have been affected. We will provide additional credit union related updates as we learn more.
