An open letter to Adrian Raeside, Today I saw your lovely political cartoon in the Times Colonist. I am an Indigenous person, but this comic opened my eyes. Truly, you are Victorias very own Jonathan Swift, for a satire this brilliant has never before hit our shores. It must be terribly inconvenient to wait 30 seconds for a territory acknowledgment during public events. Indeed, the white mans burden is a heavy one. Its just so gosh darn uncomfortable to face the reality that we live on stolen land. Why should you carry the guilt and burdens for the crimes of your ancestors? Surely, you personally have never benefitted from the genocide committed against the Indigenous peoples of Canada! And of course, its all in the past, right? Its not like we dramatically underfund healthcare, education, and social services for Indigenous people compared to non-Indigenous Canadians. Nor do we suffer from a disproportionate lack of food security. And lets not talk about those 1200 missing and murdered Indigenous women. Certainly, no one should ever suffer the grave and excruciating inconvenience of taking 30 seconds to say, We are gathered on Lkwungen territory. That is asking far too much of settlers. Theyve already lost so much to the ravenous appetites of the Indigenous peoples. What highbrow and witty humour this comic shares with us! Blessed we are to have a brilliant talent like yours, Adrian, to reveal Lisa Helps attempt to be a decent human being as hippie-dippie bleeding heart nonsense. Those damn lefties care about a bunch of unimportant things... indigenous people, trees... even bugs! How frivolous and esoteric! In conclusion, thank you Mr. Raeside. May we never waste another 30 seconds of valuable municipal time recognizing the people whose land we reside upon. Oh and I must not forget to acknowledge the Times Colonist for publishing this masterpiece and giving Mr. Raeside a voice.
