And, on the high holy day of college football… Thursday, January 1st: -Outback Bowl – Awwdern tangles with Wisconsin. In a classic SEC versus “Big”-10(14) matchup, the lumbering, run happy Badgers from the land of snow, cheese, and beer try their luck with the WarTigers from the Plains and their triple-option from the shotgun. Folks, this one will get ugly early. For all their weaknesses, Awwdern can score and score a lot. Wisconsin is married to the run and despite the gaudy numbers of their ground game, they will not be able to contend with the pace of the Awwdern offense. This one is close-ish for a half. After that, it’s all Awwdern. -Cotton Bowl – Michigan State sets to with Baylor. Baylor will pit their prolific offense against a stout Spartan defense. No matter how we looked at this one, Baylor has too much offense. The Bears scored in excess of 44 points in nine of their twelve games. Michigan State to their credit also put up some big numbers. But, and there’s always a but, Sparty was walloped by the only prolific pass offense they faced, Oregon. Expect the Cotton Bowl to go the same way. It will be close for a while, but, the Michigan State defense will succumb to the dizzying number of downfield plays thrown at them by the Baylor offense. Take the Bears for a multi-score win. -Citrus Bowl – Missouri goes at it with Minnesota. Minnesota, had a great year that included a rare win over rival Michigan. Missouri somehow overcame their schedule to land in the SEC Championship game for the second year in a row. At first glance, this is a mismatch. Missouri is from the SEC and lowly Minnesota is a perennial doormat in the “Big”-10(14). However, the stat minions point out that Minnesota is better in almost every statistical category. To be sure, Missouri can score, but, they are a fragile team that appears unable to sustain success, especially when things go wrong. The Possum says that the world is in for a shock as the Gophers beat the Tigers all day long. -Rose Bowl – Oregon and Florida State go at it in the first ever Division IA playoff. We here at Pigskin Industries have a long and proud history of dismissing the Ducks as pretenders and time has shown the wisdom of that belief. However! This year, Flo-rida State has eclipsed the Oregonians. Despite being on a two year winning streak, the Criminoles have benefited from the softest of schedules and enough outrageous fortune to make even the staunchest Awwdern fan blush. The difference in this game will be Jameis Winston and his penchant for throwing completions to the opposing team. The Possum says the Quackers will have a big lead at halftime and the expected Criminole second half comeback will never materialize. When it’s all over, Flo-rida State goes home on the short end of a lopsided score. -Sugar Bowl – Alabama and Oh-io State play the second playoff game. Oh, the drama. The Buckeyes were shocked early by the ever mysterious Virginia Tech. After that, they lost two quarterbacks to injury. Despite these setbacks, Oh-io State rallied to convincingly win the “Big”-10(14) and lobby their way into the playoffs. Wow. Just wow. On the other side of the ball, Alabama marched through their schedule like giants, mysteriously stumbling against a resurgent Ole Miss, eventually crushing Mizzery in the SEC championship. Folks, this game will set the bar for playoff games to come. Every play will matter and every mistake will be dangerous. In the end, unless Nick Saban has another brain cramp like he did in the 2013 Iron Bowl, the Pachyderms prevail. To doublecheck our conclusion, we asked the Magic 8-Ball is Bama would win. The prompt answer was, “Yes. Definitely.”
