And speaking of the need for strong families, it seems to me that the problem of the lack of inspections by the state of assisted living facilities for elderly people to ensure that they’re run properly could be solved quite easily by the families themselves making unannounced visits more frequently, and removing their elderly parents or relatives when necessary. It would appear from this article that the policy of the state-run system is “Levy fines first. Gather proof later.” The facility is guilty unless proven innocent, so to speak. While it may be that some facilities are neglecting and/or abusing their elderly residents, and the state does not have the funding necessary to make more frequent inspections, couldn’t families who live far away and can’t inspect the facility themselves frequently recruit other young retirees who have a stake themselves the system? After all, we may end up in assisted living ourselves someday. We have a stake in how the facilities are run, and we could volunteer our time and transportation when we have it to help others as well as ourselves and our own possible futures, not to mention saving ourselves increased taxes which fund poorly- managed bureaucracies.
