And while Im at it, let me convey my special regard and concern for those whove earned the Combat Infantryman Badge. My dad was one of them. These soldiers and Marines always sustain the most casualties in war. They must endure hostile fire up close and personal; they must cradle mortally wounded friends in their arms; they must witness what war does not only to combatants, but to civilians, to children; and if they are to survive, they must transform themselves mentally from civilians to killers and then back again when they go home. One of the truest scenes in any modern film, I think, is the scene in Hurt Locker in which the protagonist soldier, having returned from a deployment, is shopping in a grocery store. The agony of the bland serenity of the place is palpable. If you flag-in-the-lapel patriots, now that you are in charge, dont put real help for PTSD (not just throwing meds at the vets) on the top of your priority list, then take off those lapel pins. You dont deserve to wear them.
