Richard Merriman was at Spratton Hall between 1955-1960 and is our first Old Sprattonian to answer a few questions. Mr Merriman was a boarder at Spratton Hall for his final 5 terms and went on to Oakham as his secondary school. 1) What do you remember best about Spratton Hall and why? I remember having to wear a grey suit on Sunday mornings to go to church but Sunday afternoons we were let free to do what we wanted and roamed the fields before coming back to tea 2) Are you still in touch with any of your friends from Spratton? No 3) What did it feel like going from Spratton to Oakham? Although I enjoyed my 5 years at Spratton, I was more than ready to move on having outgrown it by then. It meant being top of one school to being bottom and a fag at the next. 4) Did you go with any of your year group to Oakham? Yes with Nick Penn. We were the first of many who now go to Oakham from Spratton. John Buchanan (then Headmaster of Oakham) presented the prizes in 1960 at the Spratton speech day - he called us Spratts! - his speech was very impressive. 5) Did Spratton help start a hobby for you which you still enjoy today? Sport in general 6) Have you a story to share with other Old Sprattonians? A few memories - there were woods at the bottom of the lawn at the back of the school where we built dens like the 1914/1918 trench dugouts and met there every evening. We once had a film show (no TV then!) and the film was The Student Prince with Mario Lanza singing. 7) Where do you see yourself in 5 years time? Well at 67 I shall just be
