~Anger and your Qi~ Have you ever noticed how anger creates physical changes in your body? Some people experience dizziness, rapid heart rate or palpitations, some notice a tightness in their chest or sensations of heat in their face. It is interesting that anger begins in the mind with ones perception, and yet causes so many negative physical sensations. From the Chinese medical point of view, anger is interconnected with Qi ("chee"). When Qi is not flowing well or stagnant, anger easily arises, and conversely, when a person gets angry, their Qi gets stagnant. Stagnant Qi can give rise to a host of other health problems, such as pain, muscle tension, circulatory disorders and digestive issues. Keeping your Qi flow unobstructed can help keep your emotions stable, and reduce the tendency to let anger take over. Exercise is a key component to healthy Qi flow, as is proper nutrition. Exercises such as TaiChi, Qi Gong and Yoga keep the meridians supple and additionally help raise the level of Qi. Denatured, fried and processed foods damage Qi while fresh, seasonal, organic foods supplement Qi. Acupuncture, cupping, and trigger point massage can tonify Qi, move stagnant Qi and remove/reduce Qi blockages. Keeping yourself grounded and having spiritual support will definitely prevent Qi stagnation: incorporate prayer, meditation, chanting, mindfulness, breath-work into your daily life to keep your Qi healthy. Even though we cannot see our Qi, it is the energetic force that flows through all body organs and tissues. We can learn to feel it, and like it or not, damage or supplement it on a daily basis based on lifestyle choices.
