Animal Totems... By Maria Shaw Lawson Do you often see the same animal time and time again? Do you run into symbols of Do you see a specific animal often? Have you ever noticed a butterfly following you as you walk? Do you dream of a specific animal? Are you drawn to photos or knick-knacks of specific species? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you are ready to meet your animal totem! What is an animal totem? Animal totems play huge roles in our lives. They aid in self-discovery and capture our imagination, giving us incredible avenues of self-expression and awareness. Additionally, they assist in understanding our past, and if we are attentive, our animal totems can reveal glimpses of our future. The Dictionary defines a totem as: A natural object, usually an animal that serves as a distinctive, often venerated emblem or symbol. A means of personal or spiritual identity. Animals have specific natures and personality traits that we should aspire to achieve. This makes animals some of the most powerful symbols in our spiritual growth. Animals afford us visions of how our lives could be if we lived more simply and lived with purity of thought and emotion. Therefore, incorporating animal totems into our lives helps us on our personal spiritual path. By focusing on the attributes of our totems, we internalize these traits and thus begin to externalize the very character we absorb from our totems. Often times, our animal totems will keep appearing to us over and over again to grab out attention and to let us know they are willing to help, guide and teach us.
