[Ankeny, IA] 50 years ago today, two of my three siblings and I attended St. Cecilia Catholic Grade School when school Principal Sister Michaelines voice came over the intercom. Our teacher had us bow our heads in prayer. Sometime later, Sister Michaeline made the horrible announcement the President Kennedy was dead. She instructed the entire school to exit our classrooms, walk across the playground to the church. The walk was very quiet as our young minds were attempting to comprehend the horrible thing that had occurred that afternoon. We attended Mass in memory of our assassinated president, said by the late Father Ryan. The church no longer exists. It was on the NE corner of where Conifer Village Apartments is, 1-1/2 blocks south of Mikes [Rolling] Body Shop. The school is now an office building. I dont know what occupies the nuns convent, just west across the street of the old Standard Gas Station. I dont think its still there, but I could be wrong. Today, at age 60 as of 2-1/2 weeks ago, I have chills going through my body. Most of us will NEVER forget that horrible day. Rest In Peace Mr. President, John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
