Ann Conant Friedman, formerly of Cambridge, MA, died peacefully in her home on November 18, 2014, with her husband, Major W. Friedman, by her side and accompanied by children, grandchildren and nieces. A descendant of Roger Conant, founder of Salem, Massachusetts, Ann was born June 8, 1924, in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of Harold Theron Conant of Camden, N.Y. and Nathalie Maud Vieau of New York City. With her brother, Francis H. Conant, Ann was raised in Camden, where her father, grandfather and great grandfather owned and operated F.H. Conant & Sons Furniture Co. Ann met and married her husband of 67 years while both were graduate students at Syracuse University. The couple then moved to Cambridge, where they raised their four children. Following a trip to Europe in 1956, Ann and Major founded European Tutorial, an early “study abroad” program for college students. From 1966 to 1985, they operated Camp Hiawatha in Kezar Falls, ME. Ann was a founder of the Fayerweather Street School in Cambridge, and later she and her husband donated the land upon which the school playground was built. For many years Ann worked as an organizer and fundraiser for the United Way, before opening a successful real estate firm, Fayerweather Associates. She was also active in Democratic politics in Cambridge. A fiercely independent thinker with a style all her own, Ann was an avid reader, a lover of beautiful objects, and a friend to animals large and small. She was known to play her trumpet late into the night, and often carried a harmonica in her purse. In addition to her husband, Ann is survived and will be greatly missed by her four children, Meredith Friedman, Eliza Wiesner, Jamie Friedman and Andrew Conant; three grandchildren, Andrew Rapacki, Nathalie Wiesner and Jacob Wiesner; sons-in-law, Denny Brennan, Edward Rapacki and Joshua Wiesner; sister in-law, Josie Conant; brother in-law, Drew Friedman; and nieces/nephews, Nathalie Conant, Eliza Wallace, Lucy Conant, Trey Friedman, Nancy Alen, Laura Commins and Donna Friedman. A family remembrance was held over the holidays. ---Boston Globe obituary, January 25, 2015
