Annotations to Maggie’s Civil War Journal, December 1864: This journal entry logs Ella and Sam Perkins and daughter Nannie’s return to their home. If you recall from an earlier post, they had been visiting Ella’s mother Aunt Jane Brown since Christmas Day. Ella can be identified as Maggie’s cousin Eleanor Ryburn Brown Perkins (1839-1866), the wife of Samuel Fearn Perkins (1828-1899) of Triune, Tennessee. During the early days of the Great Panic, Maggie and her sisters were staying at the Perkins’s West View Plantation. With the 1862 Federal occupation of Nashville, Joseph Vaulx felt that the Williamson County plantation was safer for his daughters. Nannie was Nancy Richardson Perkins (1864-1943). Nannie would marry Edward Lealand in 1899. Thursday, Dec 29th 1864. I rose early. Assisted Aunt Jane in cleaning the dining-room. Cousins Ella and Sam returned to-day. Missed dear little Nannie’s loud laugh and her bright face so radiant with childish happiness! Hettie still continues to improve. Clear and cold.
