Another popular question that always gets asked: When to do cardio, before or after weight training, and how long. Ive posted several discussions on this in the past but its been awhile! So lets do it again! Whether you are wanting to lose weight or drop body fat percentage and get leaner, I always recommend a round of cardio first thing in the morning (within 30 mins after waking up) on an empty stomach, otherwise known as fasted cardio. Whether you hit the elliptical, treadmill, or a morning walk, jog or run, try to get it in there. How long? The old saying goes, you will get out of it what you put into it. If you only put in 20 minutes, well youre only going to see 20 minutes worth of results, which means you probably wont see much of a change in your body anytime soon. The more you put in, the more you will benefit. I recommend at least 30 minutes. If you are new and just starting out, 30 minutes, then work your way up to 45, and then even an hour. I also suggest separating the two. Fasted cardio in the a.m. then weight training in the p.m. If you cant do this, then add cardio with weight training, performing your weight training FIRST and cardio AFTER. The first thing you need to understand is how your body operates. The first thing your body will burn is carbohydrates, before it even starts to burn fat. While we sleep carbohydrates are depleted, so if cardio is performed first thing in the morning what will get burned quicker? Hopefully you all answered FAT! Through the day your feeding your body carbohydrates and your body stores those and are needed for energy when weight lifting, so when youre weight lifting the body is burning through carbohydrates, once those are burn the body turns to fat as its next source, the reason why cardio is best preform after a weight lifting session. So you see, the more carbs you eat, the longer it takes for your body to get to the fat, that is why it is so important and why Im always preaching to KNOW what you are eating! Know how many carbs you are consuming per day (grams) and how much protein as well! There are reasons to everything I do, I do not just go out and do something to do it. :)
