Apoptosis, or programmed cell death, is a mechanism of cell death in which the cell dies from within and is fragmented into membrane-bound vesicles that can be rapidly phagocytosed by neighboring macrophages . By using such well-controlled apoptotic pathways, the organism ensures that minimal infl ammation is associated with the natural end of an immune response. Activation of the apoptotic pathway invokes the activation of caspases; these are proteases, bearing Cysteine residues at their active sites, which cleave aft er ASPartic acid residues.
