Are Muslims are Duty-Bound to establish an Islamic State according to Islam? ************************************************************************************** There are some Muslim scholars who think that each and every Muslim has been asked by Islam to strive to establish an Islamic state in case Islam does not reign supreme in the country he is living in. It needs to be appreciated that Muslims are not required by their religion to fulfil any such obligation. Some religious scholars do present the example of the Prophet Muhammad (sws) and say that since he had established an Islamic state in Arabia, Muslims, wherever they are, should follow his example. In this regard, it is submitted that neither did the Prophet (sws) ever undertake the task of establishing an Islamic state nor was he ever directed by the Almighty to do so. The Prophet (sws) was a messenger of God. He was not politician nor was his aim was to establish any Political authority in the land. Messengers and the Prophets of God are sent to clarify what is the truth and differentiate it from the falsehood. Good becomes evident and evil too becomes crystal clear to the people. Prophet Muhammad’s message was same as that of previous Prophets and Messengers. That there is a Creator and Sustainer of this universe, that one day all the people have to be accountable for their deeds to Him and this accountability will happen on the basis of righteousness. When Prophet Muhammad (sws) propagated this in Arabia, and as a result of it, people in Medina and later in Arabia accepted Islam in large numbers, automatically a state was established in which the rules and laws were legislated according to the Quran. As present day Muslims, we too must remember that Islam has not obligated upon us to establish any Islamic state or enforce shariah in the country of our residence. Our job, whether we are in a Muslim majority country or in a Muslim minority country, is just to convey the message of Islam. If the majority of the people in a particular country becomes practicing Muslims then automatically the laws and rules will be framed according to Islam. If in a country, Muslims are not in majority then there is no obligation upon them to establish an Islamic state. In such a country Muslims should practise and convey their religion peacefully and should be a law abiding citizen.
