Are you big on making a New years Resolution? Maybe you severely dislike the idea knowing that really after x number of years...a resolution isnt going to change a thing. For our children, it can be a neat experience - conjuring up any imaginable goal and proclaiming it on that special first day of the new year! It can be even better than neat, if the whole family is involved and can lead to much greater success than attempting any goal on ones own. A great example of this would be an overweight family who sets a collective New Years Resolution to change the food the family eats and aspires to go shoot hoops 2-3 times a week instead of watching movies or TV. It isnt uncommon to see kids who are overweight or obese where the parents have recognized the weight with concern, but rarely have they recognized that the problem is seated at home in the way the family eats and gets exercise because not only is the child overweight, but so are the siblings and parents. It is way harder to overcome a personal challenge when fighting against the crowd! But if the crowd, the family, is pushing together towards a common goal, youll be surprised what you can accomplish together. Some examples of great New Years Resolutions that the whole family can work toward -even if they might be on the easy side: I will clean up my toys and put them where they belong. I will brush my teeth twice a day, and wash my hands after going to the bathroom and before eating. I will try to find a sport or an activity (like playing tag, jumping rope, dancing or riding my bike) that I like and do it at least three times a week! I will try to eat two servings of fruit and two servings of vegetables every day, and I will drink sodas only at special times. I will take care of my body through physical activity and eating the right types and amounts of foods. I will help out in my community – through giving some of my time to help others, working with community groups or by joining a group that helps people in need. When I feel angry or stressed out, I will take a break and find helpful ways to deal with the stress, such as exercising, reading, writing in a journal or talking about my problem with a parent or friend. When faced with a difficult decision, I will talk about my choices.
