Southeast Center for Photographic Studies Alumni Reunion October 20 & 21, 2014 Daytona State College, 1200 W. Int’l Speedway Blvd., Daytona Beach. Monday, October 20 (This evening’s events are at the Southeast Museum of Photography) The Growth of a Collection Part I: 1981-2001 An exhibition selected from Museum’s Permanent Collection of more than 4500 photographs will be on display. The collection has grown rapidly since the museum’s early beginnings as the DBCC Gallery of Fine Arts. Through gifts, bequests, commissions, and grant programs, the collection now covers the history of photography from the 1840s to the present day. It is particularly strong on work from our own region. The museum also holds one of the largest collections of post-revolutionary Cuban photography in the United States. Alumni Exhibition Reception, 5:00 – 7:00 pm Please join us at this reception to honor all of our alumni. Refreshments will be served. Life Lessons: 10:00 – 10:50 am, Hosseini Center Ballroom Group conversation (all alumni are invited to participate): David Schlenker, Entertainment Editor and Columnist, Ocala Star-Banner, Moderator, Ryan Wendler, photographer, Yellow Shoes Creative Group, and Jerome Go, fashion and lifestyle photographer. What is the single-most important lesson that you learned in the program? What advice do you have to offer today’s students? Presented by the Student Photographic Association. Art of Commerce/Commerce of Art: 11:00 – 11:50 am, Hosseini Center Ballroom Steven Benson and Pierre Dutertre will explore the blurring edges between commercial and fine art photography. These photographers live in both worlds. Lunch: 12:00 – 1:30 pm, around town Time to dine and socialize at nearby restaurants including the Daytona State College Cafeteria, Hibachi Grill & Supreme Buffett, BJ’s. Through Entrepreneurialism–How To Get Where You’re Going: 1:30 – 2:20 pm, Hosseini Center, Ballroom Billy Joe Hoyle, publisher, International Street Photographer magazine, Quenby Sheree, blogger, Curating the Unseen, and Patrick Ruddy, photo editor, Fluid magazine will discuss their novel entrepreneurial pursuits. Gary Monroe will moderate this panel; expect to see many fascinating photographs. Rummel Wagner: 2:30 – 4:00 pm, Photography Building, Commercial Studio, Room 116 Owner of Central Florida Strobe Rental, in Orlando, will be putting on a lighting demo with top end equipment including the latest Broncolor and Profoto strobe gear and accessories. His editorial clients include: Sports Illustrated, Vogue, Playboy, Time and Rolling Stone. His advertising clients include: Nike, Rolex, Harley Davidson, Pepsi, Gatorade, and Red Bull. As a professional lighting grip Rummel works with some of the world’s top photographers and professional athletes. A Photographic Tribute to Bruce Moyer and David Martin, DSC Alumni:, 4:00 – 5:00 pm, Photography Building, Gallery 202 Bruce Moyer was the deputy director of photography at the Tampa Bay Times and was named National Press Photographers Association (NPPA) Picture Editor of the Year four times throughout his career. He won numerous awards in the annual Pictures of the Year International Competition, NPPA Best of Photojournalism and Society of News Design contests. David Martin, a longtime Associated Press photographer, is said to have covered nearly every major news event in the southern United States over the past 30 years. He also traveled the world for the AP, covering sporting events, political conventions and military conflicts. The exhibition of their photographs will remain on display through October 30th. Keynote Lectures–Stephen Crowley and Lawrence Cumbo: 6:00 – 8:00 pm, Hosseini Center, Ballroom Two alumni of Daytona State Colleges School of Photography who have earned worldwide acclaim will share their insights on Tuesday, Oct. 21, during the L. Gale Lemerand Entrepreneurial Speaker Series presented by the colleges Small Business Development Center. Stephen Crowley, New York Times Staff Photographer, and Lawrence Cumbo, producer, writer and owner of the iconic Opera House LIVE in Shepherdstown, W.Va., will discuss their exciting careers.
