Army life....on one my military exercises, we were sent to Subitana Mountains in the Owen Stanley Ranges. My platoon 4 was given another section on the map reference to train. Our enemy was Recce (Reconnance ,) platoon from Goldie Depot. These guys would crept up, fire at us and sneek off and we would be looking for them. Worse part was contact in the night disturbing our sleep .contact in army language means meeting the enemy. One night was given sentry duty, keep on guard and warn the camp when enemy approaches. We were given ,2 hr shift. Since Subitana area is a rainforest location ,trees were quite tall and huge, leaves cutting off sunlight . In night, we cannot see our hanf in front of us. It was both scary and unsafe. To prevent us from wondering off the boundary, a perimeter rope was tied from tree yo tree rounding camp. When we were moving and should we touch the rope, we turn in. On that night of my duty , when my two hours was up, I try to locate the next soldier but problem was I did not know exactly sleeping and when woke the soldiers up, they were wrong ones. It was too dark , frightening , and not allowed to use light. I was forced to sit whole night while 5 other guys supposed to share sentry duties had good night of undisturbed sleep. In the morning, I had hard time staying awake.. I was weak from lack if sleep. Our platoon sergeant warned any soldier found sleeping during the exercise, would given job of digging toilet ..new ones at every location. Two Keremas were caught sleeping and I was one of them...to dig toilet pit...bastards!!!
