As I sit here and listen to Ryan read, almost flawlessly, I hold back the tears. I think back to when I had that gut feeling, when he was a little over two, that something wasnt quite right. He couldnt express himself verbally, walked really late, hated loud noises...which led us to have him tested. As we expected, his receptive skills were amazingly high, but his expressive was very very low. Thats when we started speech therapy and he was diagnosed with speech apraxia which just fed my fear that my boy would never really talk. Thanks to his speech therapist, Mandy McClendon Marshall, that fear was shattered. He is now talks nonstop, has great pronunciation and vocabulary and is reading above grade level! Of course we still deal with other issues that placed him on the high functioning end of the autism spectrum, but I wouldnt ask for it to be any other way. I also owe a huge thank you to his past three years of teachers for making such a difference in his life, he wouldnt be where he is today without their guidance! Ryan is such a smart, sweet, sensitive, kindhearted child and I cant wait to see what the future holds for him! Every child is here for a reason, labels dont define them and each and every one should aim for the stars!!!
