As a future English Major, I was shocked, horrified and appalled when I realized, a while back, that our american language has no readily available opposite for the term Tom-Boy. I did some digging and discovered: Jane-Girl. The fact that this term is not obvious is troubling to me. I am proud to say that I am A Jane-Girl. As Laci Green states in this video, I have also found that it is much more acceptable for a woman to be a Tomboy, since it is seen as an improvement in some way; whereas for a man to be a Janegirl is seen as unacceptable, since it is seen as an attack on what it means to be a man or on manliness in general. On a side note, my personal use of the name Jane in this term is rooted in the Fun with Dick and Jane books and movies. I chose this because I find it ironic based on how outdated those books seem when viewed with 21st century eyes. Thanx, love you all, Lucy.
