As a member of Regional Council, my first action would be to help change the atmosphere around the council table to one of co-operation rather than the current status of animosity and polarizing behavior. Recognizing that Niagara has unique qualities that would attract outside investment, it’s imperative we adopt a consensus approach to economic development and continue to promote quality of life standards that Niagara enjoys. Better jobs not only can come from outside the region, but can develop as local business succeeds and expands. Focusing on quality of life issues where regional government can have an impact, such as poverty reduction, education, transportation, health services, environmental sustainability, housing, recreation, culture and arts helps maximize the potential of infrastructure investment and also builds a positive image for Niagara locally and abroad. With a new spirit of co-operation and initiative, local government can move forward by working with private and public sector organizations to get things done instead of getting sidetracked by bad behaviour and grandstanding. New jobs may come from larger companies looking to expand or relocate. They may also come as a result of increased trade through established industries such as our thriving agri-tourism sector. But these opportunities will only increase if Niagara becomes a more attractive place to reside and visit. Consensus is the answer for success. A collective voice for full time GO train service; A collective voice promoting the success and growth of Niagara College and Brock University; A collective voice promoting tourism and so on. So while the question of “what will YOU do” could be seen as a way to differentiate one candidate from another, my goal is to change the question to “What will WE do”.
