As a working mother with a 1 year old baby girl, I was recently questioned by one of my male colleagues—you took many days off in the past few months (because my baby frequently got sick), but you still achieved your sales target. Does that mean anyone can do your job and have the same outcome? Well, good question. I do not want to tell him the hard time I had or how I struggled to keep my work and life balanced. To be positive, I think there are indeed some reasons that working mothers can perform well or better in work, at least better than the time before they had their babies. 1. High efficiency and more effective time management. Babies could be more demanding than jobs. Mothers are naturally trained to response to their babies speedily and are able to manage multi-tasks and have the ability to prioritize their work tasks too. It is important to spend sufficient amount of time for work, but results should be measured by productivity. Quick action, Work smart, not work long. 2. Strong sense of responsibilities. Mothers work harder not only because they need to more money to buy diapers, but also their babies need a good role model to look up to. 3. Better communications skills. If you can read babies’ mind, you will be able to read your clients/bosses/working partners’ mind better. Mothers usually know the techniques to direct their babies and let them listen to her. This could be useful for their career. 4. Better teamwork. To raise babies need a lot of teamwork. Mothers need support from fathers, teachers at nursery, other mother friends, pediatricians, and so on. They need to cooperate with various parties and keep networking well. So with this good sense of teamwork, mothers usually can be a good player in team at work too. 5. Curiosity, open mind, creativity, keeping learning… Growing with curious babies, mothers see the world in new perspectives. Even playing games can bring them inspirations. And learning, learning, with babies… …. …. So, working mothers, cheer up!
