As in previous years, for the next five days I will post the principles of Kwanzaa, a week-long observance that celebrates African heritage, unity and culture. Created in 1965 by Maulana Karenga, the name Kwanzaa is derived from the Swahili phrase matunda ya kwanza, meaning first fruits of the harvest. The seven principles of Kwanzaa are practical principles for every day life – for people from all walks of life. Habari Gani? (What is the news?) UJIMA Ujima (ooh-GEE-mah) is the third day of Kwanzaa and means collective work and responsibility. On this day we celebrate working together in the community to help others. For Ujima, we pledge to rebuild our communities and to help our people solve our own problems by working together to do it.
