As its Learning Disabilities week, this week we thought we’d explain some of the technology that’s available to help you out. Now before we start, we ought to make the distinction between learning difficulties and specific learning difficulties. The latter refers to conditions such as Dyslexia and Dyspraxia whilst the former is a more general term. If you have a client or a child with a learning difficulty it can be difficult to work out what technology they need. One of the best things to start off with is also one of the simplest. Cause and effect. Now everyone knows that when you do one thing, another thing happens. You turn a light switch on, and the light comes on. For someone with a learning difficulty this concept might be quite difficult to grasp. Ok, so you’ve got the software but how are people going to access them? That’s easy by using a switch. Now switches come in all sorts of colours and shapes (and sizes too! Here are some useful resources: inclusive.co.uk/hardware/switches-and-switch-mountings doo-zy.co.uk/ If you want to find you more about how computers can help people with learning difficulties achieve their potential have a look at our factsheet.
