As some of you may know, Im working on my senior thesis for school. Im writing about how the shift from traditional family structure in America is having a significant impact on the economy. So today I was looking at some things, and one thing that almost made me puke is this. The Vera Institute of Justice has a report on what incarceration costs tax payers. Not all states participated. Out of the 40 states that participated in the study in 2010, they had an average daily population of 1,243,397 inmates. The average cost per inmate was $31,979 per year, or roughly $39,762,592,663 for fiscal year 2010. Our country makes up roughly 5% of the worlds population, but we have 25% of the worlds prisoners. Please dont read anything into what Im saying here, as I understand the problem is very complex, but this is ridiculous.
