As the first group of teenagers to enrol at World ORT’s Anieres Elite Academy settle into their new home in Israel, here’s a chance to see where it all began. This video shows the extraordinary impact of the ORT Central Institute for training World ORT instructors, which operated at Anières, near Geneva, for three decades after the war. The Institute trained thousands of competitively selected students from 30 countries – one of them went on to become a successful technology entrepreneur in the United States and donated $15 million to the new Elite Academy. The inaugural group of 23 star students from Ukraine, Moldova, Russia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Italy, Bulgaria and Germany are studying at the WIZO Nahalal Youth Village. After three years they’ll have the opportunity to complete their academic studies at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology. With $50 million of funding already secured, World ORT – together with its partners, the Ministry of Education and the Na’aleh residential high school programme in Israel for academic high achievers from the Diaspora – hopes the Anieres Elite Academy will produce some 400 engineers over the next 17 years.
