As the saying goes, This is not your fathers....well, in this case, your fathers ....asphalt. Consider this a follow up to our earlier post about our ongoing struggles with street conditions on Staten Island. Things get worse in opinion in 2015 and this old article from 2012 explains why. The asphalt NYCs uses includes RAP (recycled asphalt pavement). The Bloomberg Administration led a bill through the City Council a couple years ago that mandates the use of 30% RAP in the citys asphalt. I strongly believe this will lead to less durable streets, which will exacerbate the underlying problems we have. Add that asphalt with more RAP is even more problematic when it cools, and considering we have no local asphalt plant on the Island...and this adds up to more problems. Apparently, the road to Green Heaven and sustainability nirvana will be paved with an inferior product.
