Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuhu. Could you please tell me what is the proper way to perform sajdah sahu? Ill be waiting for the answer. Jazakallah khair. praise be to Allah WHAT TO DO IF WE MAKE A MISTAKE IN PRAYER? - SAJDAH SAHU The prostration of forgetfulness (called as sajdah sahu) in prayer is generally prescribed for three reasons and sajdah sahu doesnt apply to a person (individually) praying in jamaat (i.e. behind an imam) for he has to follow the Imam irrespective if he makes a mistake or not during his prayer. But in the case when the imam does sajdah sahu, then even he should do it behind (or along with the jamaat/ congregation) the Imam and But if the Imam doesnt do it then he should also not do it because of the hadith --> 1. Abu Hurairah reports that the Prophet (saws) said: The imam is selected to be followed; therefore, do not differ with him. When he makes the takbir, (then) make the takbir, when he goes into ruku, (then) make ruku. When he says Allah hears him who praises Him (Samiallah huliman hamidah), (then) say O Allah, our Lord, to You belongs the Praise. (Rabbana wa lakal hamd) When he goes into sajdah, (then) make sajdah. If he prays sitting, then all should be sitting. (Related by Bukhari and Muslim) 2. Narrated by Abu Huraira - Allahs Messenger (saws) said, If the Imam leads the prayer correctly then he and you will (both) receive the (full) rewards, but if the imam makes a mistake (in the prayer) then you will receive the (full) reward for the prayer, and the sin will be his. [Sahih Al-Bukhari Hadith 1.663 ] CONDITIONS OR RULING WHEN ONE IS REQUIRED TO DO SAJDAH SAHU --> 1- Doing something extra : for example, doing an extra bow (rukoo’), prostration (sujood), extra standing or sitting or etc. 2- Omitting something: such as omitting an essential part of the prayer, or omitting one of the obligatory parts of the prayer like not sitting after 2 rakats (in a 4 rakat prayer) and directly standing or missing a tashahud etc.. 3- Being uncertain: such as when a person is not sure how many rak’ahs he has prayed, whether it was three or four and similar kinds of mistakes IS DOING SAJDAH SAHU NECCESARY? --> Prophet (s.a.w) said “If any one of you forgets [something in the prayer], let him do two prostrations (Called as sajdah sahu) .” (Narrated by Muslim, 402) IS THIS APPLICABLE ONLY FOR FARDH PRAYER OR NAFIL AND SUNNAT PRAYERS AS WELL? Al-Bukhaari (may Allaah have mercy on him) said in his Saheeh: “Bab al-Sahw fi’l-fard wa’l- tatawwu’ (Chapter on forgetfulness in obligatory and voluntary (prayers) that Ibn ‘Abbaas (may Allaah be pleased with him) did two prostrations after Witr, and al-Haafiz Ibn Hajar (r.h) said in al-Fath, commenting on the report of Ibn ‘Abbaas: this was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah with a saheeh isnaad. The point of quoting what Ibn ‘Abbaas did is that Witr is not an obligatory (i.e. fardh) prayer , but Ibn ‘Abbaas nevertheless did sujood al-sahw in it, which indicates that sujood al-sahw should be done in both obligatory and naafil prayers as well. TO MAKE IT SIMPLE WE CAN SAY THAT THERE ARE 2 TYPES OF SAJDAH SAHU --> A) SAJDAH SAHOO 1 (QUBLI) : REALIZING THE MISTAKE DURING THE PRAYER ITSELF If one realizes one has made a mistake (refer above to know the Conditions or ruling when one is required to do sajdah sahu) in his salah during the prayer (i.e while he is praying) ,then he should strive to complete his prayer to the best of his conviction (refer Proof no. 2 below) and in the last sitting (i.e last tashahud) recite the last ‘tashahud’ (i.e. attahiyat….+ ashaduAllah ilaa…. + durood e ibrahim + if he wishes he may also recite some duas in arabic as it is permissible to do so); and after he has completed the tashadud he should make 2 normal sujood (called as sajdah sahu) and ONLY then end the prayer by saying tasleem ( i.e. by saying Askm on both shoulders). PROOF NO. 1 --> Narrated by Abdullah bin Buhaina - Allahs Apostle once led us in a prayer and offered two Rakat and got up (for the third Raka) without sitting (for the first tashahud which comes after the second Raka). then the people also got up with him and when he was about to finish his prayer, we waited for him to finish the prayer with Taslim but he (didn’t say the taslim, instead he) said Takbir (Allahu Akbar) and performed two prostrations (normal way) while sitting and then he finished the prayer with Taslim [Ref: This is related by Bukhari (Volume 2, Book 22, Number 315 ), Muslim, Tirmidhi, Abu Dawood] Conclusion: the sajdah sahu here is the normal sajdah , like how we say Allahu akbar and then go for sajdah, similarly even for this we shld say allahu akbar then do the first sajdah and while getting up say allahu akbar and again for the second sajdah say allahu akbar and do sajdah and similarly while getting up say allahu akbar . Hence if we realize our mistake during the prayer itself, then we should do sajdah sahu ( after reciting the final tashadud and ) before the tasleem PROOF NO. 2 --> IN THE CASE OF DOUBT OVER WHETHER OR NOT ONE PERFORMED SOME ACT OF PRAYER Abdurrahman ibn Auf reported that he heard the Prophet (saws) say: If one of you has some doubt during his salah and he does not know if he prayed one rakah or two, he should take it to have been just one (and continue his prayer from one itself ). If he does not know if he prayed two rakat or three, he should take it to have been just two (and continue the prayer from 2 rakats). If he does not know if he prayed three rakat or four, he should take it to have been just three. [In all such cases] at the end of his prayer, while sitting for tashadud, he should make two sujood before (ending the prayer ) i.e. 2 sujood before the taslim. (This is related by Ahmad, Ibn Majah, and at-Tirmidhi) Conclusion: Hence from the above hadith we learn that if for example (in any raka) while making sajdah one is not sure whether he made 2 sujood or 1 sujood then he has to take the least case of doubt to be certain i.e. he is not sure whether he made the 2nd sajdah or not, but he is sure that he made the 1st sajdah atleast, hence in this case he is to continue i.e make sajdah again and this will be counted as his second sajdah and since he made a mistake in his prayer, he has to make sajdah sahu before tasleem PROOF NO. 3 --> CAN WE CORRECT OUR MISTAKES DURING THE PRAYER ITSELF, IF WE INSTANTLY REMEMBER THE ERROR WE MADE? LETS TAKE AN EXAMPLE OF A 4 RAKAT PRAYER --> It is recorded from al-Mughirah ibn Shubah, that the Prophet sallallahu alehi wasallam said: If one of you (in a 3 or 4 rakat prayer) stands after two rakat (without sitting for tashadud) and he has not completely stood, then he should sit (if he remembers his mistake before completely standing straight) but If he is already completely standing (and then if he remembers his mistake), he should not sit , (rather he should continue the prayer) and he should make two sujood of forgetfulness (before ending the prayer i.e. before making the taslim) (This is supported by Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and Ibn Majah ) B) SAJDAH SAHOO2 (BAADI) : REALIZING THE MISTAKE AFTER (ending) THE PRAYER If one realizes that one has made an error in prayer after one has already completed his prayer then immediately after he realizes the error he made, he should make the two sajdahs of ‘sajdah-sahoo’ by the method as it is explained below - PROOF NO. 4 --> Ibn Masood said: The Prophet led us in prayer and he performed five Rakahs. When he turned around after ending the prayer, the people whispered to one another. He said: What is the matter? They said: O Prophet of Allaah! Has the prayer been increased (i.e. by Allaah)? He replied: No. They said: You performed five Rakahs. So, he stood up again and performed two prostrations for forgetfulness, and then, said Salaam (i.e. tasleem i.e. by turning his face to right and left saying: As- SalamuAlaikum-Warahmat-ullah). After that, he said: I am just a human being like you (i.e. I forget)” [ Ref: Narrated in Sahih Al muslim and another similar narration is in Sahih Al bukhari Vol.2 Book 22 hadith 317, Also by Muslim tirmidhi & abu dawood and etc ] Conclusion : here the prophet (s.a.w) had already finished his prayer but with an extra rakat so when he realized it (after completing the prayer) all he did was to make two prostrations of sahu and say the tasleem (i.e. saying salaam on both shoulders to end the prayer) once again and thats it Example : You prayed asar with 5 rakats or maghrib with 4 rakats and realized the mistake after completing the prayer , and lets say you turned around from ur original poisition in which u were sitting in the masjid. Now when u remeber your error, you simply face the Qiblah again and make 2 (regular) prostations of sajdah sahu and then say tasleem (i.e. salaamualikum on both the shoulders) PROOF NO. 5 --> ‘The Prophet (peace be upon him) lead them in the Dhuhr prayer or the ‘Asr prayer and gave the salutation (i.e. tasleem ) after two rak’ahs. Then he departed quickly from one of the doors of the mosque, and the people were saying that the prayer had been decreased. The prophet (peace be upon him) meanwhile, stood by a piece of wood placed in the mosque, leaning against it, as if he was angry. So a man stood and said, ‘O Messenger of Allaah, have you forgotten or has the prayer been reduced?’ So the Prophet of Allaah (peace be upon him) said, ‘I did not forget nor has it been reduced.’ So the man said, ‘Rather you have indeed forgotten.’ So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to the Companions, ‘Is what he is saying true?’ They said ‘Yes’ So the Prophet (peace be upon him) went forward and prayed what remained of the prayer (i.e the remaining 2 rakats), and then he gave the salutation (tasleem) , then he prostrated twice (i.e called as sajdah sahu), then he gave the salutation (tasleem) again [Ref: Agreed upon by All hadith Books ] Conclusion : in this scenario, we learn that if we realize after finishing our prayer that we have missed praying one or more rakat , then we have to make up for it i.e. complete the missed out portion of the rakat ( be it 1 or 2 or 3 rakat) and then after finishing the prayer ( i.e. after saying the tasleem) we have to do 2 prostrations of sahu and then Again make the tasleem Warning : After completion of ones prayer if one realizes his mistake immediately i.e. approximately lets say in a span of 5 minutes or sooner, then he is to do Sajdah Sahu Baadi . but if he remebers this like after a long time like half an hour or 15 minutes or an Hour or so then he has to repeat his prayer and this is the fatwa of major scholars like Shaikh Ibn Uthaymeen (r.h) , Shaikh Saleh Al Munajjid and etc . SAJDAH SAHU CANNOT BE MADE IF ONE LEAVES ANY OF THE PILLAR OF SALAH It is necessary to know that it is not acceptable to perform the prostration for forgetfulness in case of forgetting or leaving out any of the pillars of the prayer (such as begining the prayer by raising the hands and sayin takbeer (Allahu akbar) or not being in Wudhu and etc) . This is not sufficient as leaving out any pillar nullifies the prayer and thus it must be performed again. The same ruling applies to the conditions for the validity of the prayer. Example : An example (of this) is the case of a person who forgets the second prostration in the first rakaat, but remembers this whilst sitting down between the two prostrations in the second rakaat. So he should discard the first rakaat and the second one will take its place, so he counts that as his first rakaat and completes his prayer based upon that and then in the final sitting (i.e. for the final tashadud) he should do 2 prostrations (of sajdah sahu) before the tasleem (before the tasleem because he realized his mistake during the prayer and not after it) WHAT IF I DID SAJDAH SAHU BECAUSE I INTITIALLY THOUGHT I MADE AN ERROR BUT LATER REALIZED THAT I NEVER MADE A MISTAKE AT ALL? Narrated on the Authority of Aboo Sa’eed al-Khudree (may Allâh be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, ‘If one of you doubts in his prayer and does not know how many he has prayed –whether it is three or four – then let him cast away the doubt and build upon what he is certain of. Then let him perform two prostrations (of sajdah) before giving the salutation. So if he has prayed five (i.e made a mistake), then they will make his prayer even for him, and if he has prayed the full four, then they will be a humiliation for Satan.’ [Ref: Sahih Muslim] Conclusion : Prophet (s.a.w) said “And if he has prayed it completely then the two prostrations will be a humiliation for the Shaytaan.” i.e the prayer remains valid nevertheless and the loss and humility is to the shaitan only All mistakes are Mine and All good is from Allah alone. May Allah have mercy on the one who corrects me.
