Assistant Chief Constable Ian Wiggett said: "Today, Saturday 15 June 2013, we have seen a number of protests and peace walks held in Ashton under Lyne town centre. "Greater Manchester Police, working together with Tameside Metropolitan Borough Council, policed a demonstration this afternoon at the Cenotaph in Ashton town centre. Up to 200 protestors were present. Two arrests were made for public order offences during the demonstration. A further two arrests were made for breach of the peace after the demonstration had finished. “EDL organisers had earlier informed police that they had cancelled their demonstration and would not be in Ashton today. However, the operation remained in place as we anticipated that people would still attend. The march to and from the Cenotaph and the protest was managed with a minimum of disruption to the town centre. "The majority of the protestors have now left. It is very much business as usual in all our towns and people have been able to continue to enjoy their day. "People have a right to protest, provided such protests are held peacefully. I am pleased to say that thanks to the operation with Tameside council, the protests have passed off peacefully and without serious incident. I am also very grateful to our local communities who have showed patience and understanding, and who have played their part in ensuring today has been a peaceful day." gmp.police.uk/Content/WebsitePages/2C2948086153DBAB80257B8B00518CD7?OpenDocument
