At 2:59 this afternoon I filed 1,986 signatures to run as an aldermanic candidate here in the 49th Ward. Of course until we hear back from the CBOE to certify our candidacies, no one is officially on the ballot. Its to be expected that incumbents challenge signatures, so I fully expect that our alderman will challenge our signatures and anyone else who has filed in our ward. Of course the alderman, his paid staff and rather expensive campaign lawyer will have to find that over 1,500 residents who signed our petitions are invalid signatures. Given the overwhelming number of signatures above the required 473 that so many dedicated unpaid volunteers gathered, that will be difficult at best. One might ask the question, though, as to why they do this? What are they afraid of? Why do they desperately want to run unopposed? In the end, it always gets back to their performance, or lack of, in office. If they cant run on their records, then they would prefer to run unopposed rather than try to defend a record in office that is, well, indefensible. So over the next week, well know whether our incumbent will challenge his opponents signatures here in the 49th, including ours. He has until next Wednesday, the 3rd to do so. The CBOE has until the 18th of December to certify and notify candidates. After that, it will be official. Finally, youve heard our incumbent refer to this period were in as the silly season. I prefer to view it as the ultimate expression of our democracy - citizens stepping up to serve the public and run for office. Thats what Ive done today in filing and thats what hundreds have done across the city! Wish all of us well in getting on the ballot and on February 24th, 2015 the citizens of this ward and this city will have real choices for mayor and for aldermen - independent voices who will represent the interests of their constituents and not the special interests of campaign contributors or the political party machine that sent them.
