At the For a Long, Long, Long Time: The Music Appreciation Society Presents Drones panel discussion and listening event on Wednesday November 19 at SFU in Vancouver, panelist Andrea Lukic (of the terrific punk band Nü Sensae) presented the album Time Machines by Coil, a project of John Balance and Peter Christopherson (a.k.a. Sleezy of the foundational English industrial band Throbbing Gristle). Time Machines was an attempt to design ambient drones that captured, embodied and enhanced drug experiences, with each of the four tracks on the album named after a specific drug: 1. 7-Methoxy-ß-Carboline: (Telepathine) 2. 2,5-Dimethoxy-4-Ethyl-Amphetamine: (DOET/Hecate) 3. 5-Methoxy-N, N-Dimethyl: (5-Me0-DMT) 4. 4-Indolol, 3-[2-(Dimethylamino)Ethyl] Phosphate Ester: (psilocybin) To our surprise, the cover of the album, which Andrea presented on screen as she played excerpts from it, strongly resembled the long oval shape of the framed and reflective image of Eros in Antonia Hirsch’s exhibition Negative Space (an image we’ve posted here before). Since Andrea had not yet seen the exhibition, this seemed like a great coincidence. As Andrea elaborated, however, the image on the cover was it fact a reference to the oval obsidian ‘scrying mirror’ (similar to a crystal ball in capacity) supposedly used by the Renaissance magician and astronomer John Dee, who was an adviser to Queen Elizabeth I. Interestingly, Dee’s mirror becomes a potential 16 Century precursor to the Claude Glass (the dark mirror we’ve also posted about here before), which was popularized in the 18 Century, but named after the 17 Century French landscape painter Claude Lorrain). Perhaps there’s something to all this Magick? Its really great -- and more than a little trippy. youtube/watch?v=wkL8xhvmaxE
