Awwww! Im gonna get a bit sappy for this #ThrowbackThursday. 10 years ago this week I met one of best friends, Alex Felsinger. To be perfectly honest, for years I thought of him more as a good pal who I had A LOT in common with rather than a truly close friend. I remember a turning point for me, in late 2008, when he got me a job writing for an environmental blog he was Editor for. I really wasnt too qualified, and he walked me through the process in baby steps to show me how to adjust my writing and self-promo to maximize readership. I reflected that night about how almost every good thing that had happened to me over the previous four years could in some way be traced to him, whether directly or indirectly, and how much he pushed me more than anyone Id ever met to be both more ethical and also more willing to take (calculated, wise) risks for the sake of my own happiness. At that point, I realized that he was absolutely one of my closest friends, and by far my closest male friend. Giving each other toasts at our respective weddings last year that were simultaneously brutal and loving really solidified for me how far he and I have come in a friendship that began mostly as a shared taste in music and has since turned into a million times more. Im truly privileged to be able to work five (or six...or seven...) days a week with someone so amazing. Alex - its hard to say in person sometimes, so Ill take the easy road by saying it on the internet instead: I love you, and my life wouldnt be the same without you.
