BA (9) has been working on reading. One of the little obstacles hes been working on is slow reading peppered with ums. I tried stopping him when he did it but he found that really irritating. He was starting to clam up a little so I gave that up in short order. We were using the metronome for piano so we just used it for reading while we were at it. We started reading one word every other beat (andante) then the same sentence with one word per beat (andante). Boom. Instant improvement with the metronome. I havent heard an um this week and he doesnt have to listen to me correcting his reading. Were staying with andante for now even though its clear he could go faster. Were having success so we wont mess with it. I get the sense that its helping him slow down and organize his reading process just as it does his piano process. Twice this week when a piece started to get away from him I heard him stop, say, slower, and begin again at a more controlled speed. Lovely.
